Even though we didn’t realize it at the time, our first foray into the world of Amaro actually happened last year. We were making a Negroni for the first time on one of our shows and we wanted to know what all of the components (Campari/Sweet Vermouth/Gin) tasted like individually before we mixed them together. We already knew what to expect from gin and had a decent idea what to expect from the vermouth, but the Campari was a mystery. Campari is a type of bitter made in Italy and is widely used in a variety of drinks. More commonly known as Amaro (bitter in Italian), this category of drink features styles at all points on the bitter spectrum constructed with a wide variety of herbs. Some of the more well known bitters include Aperol, Cynar, and Fernet-Branca. Keith was definitely more on the positive side of Campari while Andrew was not a fan. We were both intrigued enough by this category to want to try more and the one we found is what we will be sharing with you on today’s show. For this episode we will be trying the Pronto! Amaro from Trader Joe’s. They just started carrying their own version of Amaro and the feedback from trusted sources (Fitz) was quite positive so it seemed like the right thing to do. We will also be trying a cocktail, the Montenegro Paloma, made with it as well. What did we think? What do you think?
