In 2011 Stone Brewing began their Odd Beers for Odd Years program. They took two of their seasonals, (Old Guardian Barley Wine and Imperial Russian Stout) and made two versions of each. The standard version they have been making for years and an “Odd Release” in which they make a change. That year they used a Belgian yeast in both and in the IRS they added some anise for good measure. Both came out wonderfully in our opinion, especially the IRS. Fast forward to 2013 and we have two new additions to the “Odd” family. The Old Guardian Barley Wine that we will be having today gets a heavy dose of German oak-smoked malt. The other, which we hope to have soon, will get some espresso beans added to the brew. One of my great quests is to get Keith to truly enjoy a barley wine. Today with the help of a little smoke it just may happen.
