Give It A Shot – Pinhook High Proof Bourbon vs Stagg Jr Bourbon
When it comes to these harder to source bourbons, often people are looking for easier to find, less expensive substitutes that have a similar flavor profile. It had been suggested to us recently that we should try the Pinhook High Proof Bourbon in comparison to the Stagg Jr.
With National Beer Day looming in the not too distant future, we decided we needed to take a break from having beers on our Thursday Night show on Twitch.tv. For our show on the last day of March, we opened with a couple of hard Kombuchas, which were tasty and then moved on to bourbon. Some bourbons have become increasingly difficult to find in the past few years and often when they are found it is on the secondary market which means they are going to be expensive. One of those that is hard to find is the Stagg Jr. from Buffalo Trace, which is barrel proof, unfiltered, and delicious. Andrew was lucky enough to be the recipient of a bottle a couple of years ago as a gift and we tried it for one of our shows a couple years back. The results of that tasting is the episode that we have for you this week. The Stagg Jr. checks in at 132 proof and is anywhere from $80 to $300 if you can find it. The Pinhook is around 120 proof, $50 a bottle and as of this writing relatively easy to find. What did we think? What do you think?
