We go bigger this week (we know we hate that cliche too) thanks to a beer from Alaskan Brewing at the tasting table. The Hopothermia Double IPA is their latest year round release. What makes something a double IPA you might ask? If you go by BJCP guidelines, cause why not, the two most important things are the IBUs (international bittering unit) and the ABV (alcohol by volume). The Hopothermia is on the low end of the IBUs, 70, for this style and almost exactly in the middle at 8.5% ABV. The quintet of hops used to create the bitterness should be familiar to most: Nugget, Apollo, Amarillo, Citra and Centennial. Time now to taste and discover if this beer is a welcome option throughout the year or has simply left us out in the cold.
